“Padurea Domneasca”

The biggest nature reserve of scientific interest in Moldova is situated on the meadowlands of the middle Prut river in a zone known as the “Padurea Domneasca” (185 km north of Chisinau).

Along the river Prut, covering a vast area, a meadow forest extends with its characteristic species for this type of environment: willow-trees, oaks, poplars, beeches, etc. The flock of herons, which live in the “Padurea Domneasca”, have their nests not on the bushes or reed thickets but up in the trees spread over a large area. Locals call this place “herons’ Land”, a real paradise for these birds, which feature in the Red Book.

On the other side of the Forest there is another curiosity called “One Hundred Hillocks”. The parallel arrangement, on the left side of the river, of the hundreds of hillocks is still a mystery. There are a lot of interpretations of this phenomenon: are they tombs of ancient solders, or are they some old coral rocks covered by soil, etc.? Each visitor is welcome to offer his own suggestion.

The administration of the “Lord’s Forest” nature reserve encourages tourists to visit these places where they can see ancient caves, the biggest lake in Moldova - “Costesti-Stanca”, some old villages and wooden churches dating back 2 or 3 centuries.
